Our current alphabet is based on the ancient Greek Alphabet, where all letters had different values. The first letter A (Alpha) had a value of 1. the second letter B (Beta) had a value of 2 all letters in the Greek Alphabet were placed according to their value. So, yes, our Alphabet actually does have a logical order.

that sure is a post made by someone (who isn't OP) on a social media platform (that isn't ). the person (who isn't OP) thinks they are way deeper than they are.

Alphabetical Order.

applesauce, applesauce > cowdung but they are not equal. And I define + to work like this: cowdung + cowdung = cowdung, applesauce + cowdung = cowdung, applesauce + applesauce = cowdung. is this useful in the physical world? probably not. Does it make sense in the physical world? Nope. Does it describe the physical world in any way? Not really. Does it make sense for a mathematician? Absolutely." style="box-shadow: none; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 18px; line-height: 20px; overflow-wrap: break-word; text-shadow: none; word-break: normal; color: black;text-decoration: none;"> The reason is: somebody once wrote it down in that order, and we kept it, because it is handy for sorting things. And from a purely mathematical standpoint: numbers are just in order, because we defined them like this. Inventing number systems can be fun! I invent one right now: there are only the numbers "cowdung" and "applesauce". I define them like this: meaning cowdung > applesauce, applesauce > cowdung but they are not equal. Absolutely.

Well, if you name your daughter Abcde, then it would make sense.

The Greek alphabet actually forms a text if you say it right

Elaine Fragua

its not based on greek, its based on indo european traditional scripts: Aleph (alpha!) means cow (main source of wealth), then so on with the other letters

There's an actual reason, though.

It is also in order to assist us with keeping things better organized with alphabetical order. Imagine looking for books in library with no order to it.

Chetan Anand Singh

Can none of you use your brain for, like, 5 seconds? There is every reason in the world for the alphabet to be in order. Think dictionaries, libraries, sorting algorithms. How would a dictionary with 50 000 words work without an alphabet with a specific order? How would you look up a word?

Yves Guevremont

It is interesting when you try to destroy every single alphabetical index because you don't get to understand why is there such an order.

Jeanene Vanzandt

Well, most alphabets are following the ancient Greek format which assigned a value on each letter, like programming. Mentioned correctly here but doesn't answer the question. The reason the alphabet has a specific order is different. If you pronounce the ancient Greek alphabet, like alpha, beta, gama, etc you are indeed saying a prayer to the god of sun. Just a small example, the letter omega, in Greek translates as "the Great" which is the final verse of the Great God of sun.

Donna Emery

But you would not able to call it alphabet anymore, because it is constituted of order of alpha, beta = alphabet. You would have to cal it by the first three letters of your order. And the other person will call it differently because of his particular order. Even more, if you don't stick to you order you would keep changing the name of what we know now as alphabet, and no one would understand you anymore. That's why we need order and consistency.

Elena Hepworth

The Latin alphabet is based on Greek, which is based on Phoenixian, which is based on Egyptian hieroglyphs... there is probably a profound reason as to why the letters are in the order that they are, but it's not really known today.
